Early in my career, I experienced a certain degree of success. However, after awhile, everyday when I came home from work, I was at my wits end. My current job, at the time, just wasn’t for me anymore and I felt desperate to find a way out.
I wanted to leave it and replace it with the kind of work that would allow me to live the life I wanted to live, and weirdly, I felt shame in feeling desperate. There was no one around me who understood the depth of my unhappiness, and there was not a soul I knew who could help me.
I turned to the internet, of course. Why not? We go to it like a best friend who knows everything. I felt like all I had to do was search for that thing that would make me happy and one day I would find it. So, I searched. Every night.
Some people around me could tell sometimes I wasn’t happy, and they didn’t understand why I just didn’t accept that unhappiness is a part of life, no one likes their job really, so suck it up. It got under their skin that I was spending time looking for something they believed wasn’t there.
Their dispositions shouted, “Get your head out of the clouds, stop dreaming, stop watching so many movies, stop thinking your life is going to be any different from ours.” They felt all I would find were scams and I was wasting my time, and frankly, they didn’t want to be around me.
They were partially right, there are tons of scams online, praying on those of us believing in a better and easier life through having a business online. One of the last things I wanted, for all my effort, was to get excited about a how to start a successful online business program, commit to it by giving them my money, then realizing it was just set up to take my money. Happening once was enough, but this happened too many times and I was left with less money and feeling just that more desperate, when some days I didn’t even want to get out of bed.
The Rabbit Hole
I can’t tell you the exact directions of how I ended up finding all the sites I found when I searched for subjects like working from home. I started with the common search terms until I found something I thought was legit.
A lot of the sites would make it seem like I could reach great success with their programs and that if they didn’t work, it was because I didn’t do something right, or put in enough time, money, and/or effort.
Whenever something didn’t work, I felt like it was because something was wrong with me and it didn’t help matters if there was a person who brought me into the program because they would just question my commitment.
It wasn’t because of me. Those programs were designed to make me feel that way, they were never going to work.
Gratefully, I learned from my many mistakes and I started becoming very discerning on which sites I would even spend 2 minutes on. I could identify the wording and format of the work from home programs, that claimed they could help me change my life, for the scams they really were. And, finally, I found at least a couple that were the real deal.
I started understanding that it was important to pick a program that was compatible with me – my personality, energy and stamina. I realized I couldn’t do any job from home, because I really didn’t want a ‘job’. I also realized I didn’t want to set up just any online business because some just weren’t for me. So, through contemplation and a long self-evaluation, I decided one of my pursuits would be an online affiliate program.
During this pursuit, I also started to understand what my needs were. This was important because I was starting from scratch and some programs just didn’t have the level of training or the support for the training I
needed to be successful. Since I had not ever created an online affiliate business and needed to start from the
very beginning, I also needed to know I could count on someone to help me when I perceived myself to be stuck.
Sometimes, I feel like I’m a special learner. I need to learn in a structured, consistent and supportive environment. I need to be able to ask the instructor/trainer any and all questions I have and I, most importantly, need to know that they are commited to my success.
Wealthy Affiliate Overview
So, there’s this, what I’m calling, online community called Wealthy Affiliate. When I first came across it, I thought immediately this is great. It’s a member based platform for anyone, of any level, to learn how to become an affiliate marketer online. They have two membership types: starter and premium.
This is one of the reasons I immediately thought this community was great. I could start for free! They said I could make $ while I learned and I could do it without spending any of my money first. They said they would train me on how to create a website and monetize it.
As I went through the training, I learned that if I created a website as a starter member the url of the website would look something like [yourwebsite].siterubix.com. I didn’t want that and I decided to move to the premium membership early on, so I didn’t experience earning money as a starter member. It doesn’t mean someone else couldn’t do it, I just didn’t go this route.
Community Connection & Training
The founders, Kyle and Carson, encourage members to make $ from their hobbies by identifying them as niches and then creating them into successful online businesses. At first, I couldn’t think of a hobby, or an idea for a niche, however I quickly was able to see which lessons would train me in finding niches and ultimately choosing the direction I wanted my business to go (here is an example).
Here is another example of a tool I have used to help with finding a niche, or finding keywords to create content for my site. I created a free account and was able to search and make decisions based off the results. I have since upgraded, but the free account was also amazing for me.
At the bottom of the search window, you can see the last known searches. Once you type some keywords and click ‘find keywords’, it will take you to a page with your blurred results. Sign-up for the free account to unblur them.
After you build your website, via WordPress, there is that mega task of getting traffic to your site. Founder Kyle states their platform could train anyone to do this. This was another reason I thought this community was great.
I felt I would have access to everything I would need to build a really nice website that could make me $.
Fellow members, including Kyle, share strategies within videos that show their commitment to everyone’s success. There are hundreds and hundreds of trainig videos, and I never felt overwhelmed. I felt supported – I feel supported, because I am still a member today.
